nesreproductions.com - Hall of Shame
In recent years, the number of people making and selling reproductions has exploded. Competition is a healthy thing - it keeps us all honest and fosters innovation. Unfortunately, since starting nesreproductions.com back in 2002, I've also fixed many reproduction carts made by other fly-by-night sites / eBay scammers. In recent years, this has ballooned to an unprecedented volume. New customers have been sending me games to fix made by other reproduction sites. In the spirit of one of my favorite YouTubers (Jason of game-tech.us) I'm going to start posting some of not-so-good reproductions I'm stuck fixing.

Some of the common mistakes I see all the time include:
  • individuals that don't understand what they are doing (blindly following instructions found on the Internet)
  • individuals that don't correctly wire up memory chips
  • individuals that don't use the correct materials
  • sloppy in their work
It's your hard earned money. Make sure what you are buying is as professional on the inside as outside. You should expect these reproductions to work as long as you own them.
Super Mario Bros 3 Chaos Control ROM hack can be found here. It's a decent hack to be applied on top of the standard SMB3 ROM.
  • this game has save capability but notice original 20 year old battery never replaced
  • sloppy wiring job - wires running all over the place - no care to make them as short and tidy as possible
  • wrong wire used - 30ga single strand wire works most times, but fails for some reproductions with specific donor carts
The program data memory chip (PRG) for this game requires a 27C020 EPROM. Yet this chip was wired as if it's a 27C040.
The character data memory chip (CHR) for this game requires a 27C010 EPROM. Yet this chip was wired as if it's a 27C020.
Pin 31 of the 27C010 was also left floating. According to EPROM data sheet, all pins must be connected (even if only to GND or Vcc)
Vpp (pin 1) leg of 27C020/27C010 were broken off and left floating. According to EPROM data sheet, all pins must be connected (even if only to GND or Vcc)

In no way am I here to single out any particular reproduction site. I'm sure I made a TON of mistakes when I first started. I hope this will educate both the consumer to purchase a better product, and the reproducer, to learn before you sell.
